A few children’s books crossed my path that relate to bikers and motorcycles. These are fun, educational reads, not only for children, but for adults as well. It’s nice to see something that isn’t promoting a negative stereotype of bikers!
Bikers Are Animals by Paul Jamiol
Paul Jamiol, an avid motorcyclist, decided it was time children learn the truth about bikers. His book emphasizes that motorcyclists are fun, intelligent, hardworking folks that have families just like anyone else. It’s a classic “don’t judge a book by its cover” story but done a unique way. Animals of different species are the bikers in this book and Jamiol writes of tolerance and understanding the differences in each other are what make us better. The book also includes a special section of line drawings that can be photocopied and given to a child to color. The illustrations are marvelous and the story will speak to children of all ages.

The Mouse and the Motorcycle by Beverly Clearly
This timeless children’s book was first published in 1965, but its themes of friendship, sharing, loyalty and selflessness still ring true. The Mouse and the Motorcycle is a story about the friendship between a boy and a mouse… and the shiny red toy motorcycle that they share. It also encourages following your dreams even if they are unconventional or unpopular.

Once Upon a Cool Motorcycle Dude by Kevin O’Malley
Age Range: 4 to 10
Author Kevin O’Malley tackles gender differences in a sophisticated, yet lighthearted way using a fairy tale princess, her ponies, a mean giant and the muscular biker hero who saves the princess’ favorite pony. Other themes in this book include sharing, the importance of taking turns and cooperation. One 6 year-old boy claims, “This is the best book ever!”

The Little Motorcycle by C. Edward Link
Age Range: 1 to 8
This story is about TeeZee, a motorcycle waking from a long winter’s sleep to compete in Daytona racing. Definitely geared for the racing set, but still an adorable story that sheds light on racing culture, sharing and learning from your elders.
